When a sparkler just won’t cut it and you need a dose of flash and bang for the Fourth of July, hop in the family vehicle and haul everybody to one of the fireworks shows in our area. They’re all free, and several have the added bonus of being held at scenic waterfront locations. It’s also much safer than watching Uncle Bob set off bottle rockets in the back yard.

One of our favorite fireworks venues is Chestertown.  It could be that the old brick buildings and sidewalks feel very colonial, giving us an added connection to that Revolutionary-era spirit of Independence. Bring a blanket and snacks to Wilmer Park on the Chester River. The park is a good choice for kids because they have room here to run. We’ve always been able to find a parking space nearby.

Here’s a quick rundown of where you can catch fireworks for July Fourth 2010 in the Cecil County area:

• Friday, July 2, Chesapeake City will have fireworks for the first time. These will be launched from the northside of town at what locals call “The Sisters’ Property” (the big white barn with the red roof off Route 213). This event is sponsored by the Chesapeake City Merchants Association and the Volunteer Fire Company of Chesapeake City.

• Saturday, July 3, Rock Hall hosts its July Fourth parade, to be followed by fireworks over the waterfront.

• Sunday, July 4,  Havre de Grace will sponsor a parade in the downtown area, to be followed by fireworks at dusk.

• July 4, Sassafras River fireworks and boat parade, Georgetown. At dusk, look for decorated boats and then fireworks. Free.

• July 4, Chestertown fireworks, dusk. Free. For the first time in many years, fireworks will be launched on the Chester River waterfront.
